Devonport Gazette & Greater North Shore Advocate 1921-1924 The weekly Devonport Gazette and Greater North Shore Advocate was published from 13 November 1921 until 6 Novermber 1924. From 1924 the newspaper was renamed the North Shore Gazette to reflect a wider focus on neighbouring areas. Issues were printed on paper that was heavier than that of other newspapers of the time, most likely to better present promotional photographs for the silent movies being shown at Devonport’s Victoria Theatre - in the same building as the Gazette’s printer and publisher. The newspaper was distributed free across the Devonport area, and to non-residents of Devonport who came to the movies. The Devonport Gazette reported meetings of the Devonport Borough Council, with some coverage of wider North Shore activities. The major topics reported were transport (trams, buses and ferries, and a possible harbour bridge), the water supply, and developing the electricity supply. The Gazette also provided a local focus with reporting about sporting teams, Devonport and Takapuna Borough Council activities, obituaries for local Devonport residents, and local events. Advertisements for consumer goods and services offered on the city side are numerous, emphasising the shopping and employment connection by ferry between Devonport and the city. |

North Shore Gazette 1924, 1926-1930, 1934, 1936 (vol. 15 no. 41 - p 1 erroneously prints the year of issue as 1916), 1945-1948 The weekly North Shore Gazette continued the Devonport Gazette and Greater North Shore Advocate, the change of title relecting a wider focus on neighbouring areas to include Belmont, Bayswater, Takapuna, Milford, Glenfield, Northcote, Birkenhead, Birkdale and Chelsea. The subtitle “& Victoria Theatre Courier” was added at some stage in the 1930s and disappeared again around 1935. The last issues noted are from 1948. Because very few issues of the paper for the 1930s and 1940s are available, it is not possible to be more precise about it for this period. |

Northcote Athenaeum Meteor 1905-1915 The Northcote Athenaeum Meteor was publshed annually in Northcote from 1905 to 1915. Although the issue of 20 December 1915 makes no mention of being the final issue, its publisher, the Northcote Athenaeum (Literary, Musical, Debating and Dramatic Society), went into hibernation after 1915 so it is unlikely that more issues were published. |
