Welcome

Welcome to the Recollect site for The Preserving Local History and Educational Trust, Te Pupuri I Nga Hitori o Te Rohe Trust. The Trust aims to preserve the stories that have shaped our communities and make them accessible to New Zealanders both at home and abroad.

This Recollect site provides immediate access to newspapers digitised by the Trust while we wait for the images to be ingested into the National Digital Heritage Archive and eventually uploaded to Papers Past. Public access to these historical newspapers supports the inclusion of Aotearoa New Zealand histories within the education curriculum by supplying primary sources for learning.

Our Aims

The Preserving Local History and Educational Trust, Te Pupuri I Nga Hitori o Te Rohe Trust, seeks to preserve the unique voices and stories found within historical newspapers allowing us to gather important insights from the past and enrich Aotearoa New Zealand's cultural heritage. The purpose of the Trust is the advancement of education, the preservation of Aotearoa New Zealand's history, and other matters beneficial to the community.

This Recollect site serves as a database for heritage newspapers by providing rights-managed access to various titles that the Trust has digitally preserved with assistance from funding agencies and its strategic partners. It provides immediate access to newspapers digitised by the Trust while we wait for the images to be processed and ingested into the National Digital Heritage Archive and eventually uploaded to Papers Past.

Aotearoa New Zealand's newspapers hold immense historical significance and can reveal valuable information about various aspects of our society. We estimate there are two million newspaper pages at risk of loss through damage, disposal, or natural decay. Digitisation has played an important role in ensuring this information is easily accessible, benefiting researchers, students, family historians, and anyone interested in our nation's history.
