The first issue of the Otago Witness was published in Dunedin on 8 February 1851. Initially published fortnightly, it became weekly from 30 August 1851. The Otago Witness pioneered the use of illustrations and photographs in newspapers in New Zealand, becoming one of the country’s most significant illustrated weekly newspapers. Its final issue was 28 June 1932.
