Henderson Independent
The Henderson Independent was a short-lived weekly tabloid newspaper that circulated throughout West Auckland beginning with its first issue on 15 June 1960. Released every Tuesday, it was published by Henderson Newspapers Ltd and printed by Falcon Press Ltd.
The unnamed editor of the paper in its inaugural issue lightly attacked the rival Waitakere Gazette, stating that ‘we have long been of the opinion that the people of Henderson are starved of local news’. This statement held little weight since the proclaimed circulation area for the Independent almost perfectly matched that of the Gazette. The editor then explained the newspaper’s name, saying it ‘was not chosen lightly, as it is our intention and solemn promise that we will at all times hold an unbiased view and report accordingly’. Such may have been the intent, but it was not the result.
The paper ran independently for 34 issues over nine months. Its final issue was published on 28 February 1961, after which the company was taken over by the publisher of its rival, Suburban Publishers Ltd, which rebranded it the Henderson Gazette.
