The Southwestern Leader was an aggressive push by Suburban Newspapers Ltd into the West Auckland market following successful acquisitions on the North Shore and in South Auckland.
Suburban Newspapers, a subsidiary of New Zealand Newspapers Ltd, owner of the Auckland Star, had purchased the North Shore Times and the South Auckland Courier in 1961. The West Auckland market, meanwhile, was divided between Suburban Publishers Ltd and District Newspapers Ltd. Targeting the latter, Suburban Newspapers launched the Southwestern Leader on 19 September 1962, targeting the same distribution area with additional reach into Central Auckland.
