The West Auckland Press, first published on 27 February 1962, was an expanded tabloid newspaper that directly spun off from the Tuesday edition of the Waitakere Gazette and acted as a spiritual successor to the Henderson Independent, which had been absorbed by the Gazette in 1961.

Much of its distribution area matched that of the Gazette, but it also included Titirangi and left out Ranui and Massey. Ownership remained with Noel E. Roseman and Suburban Publishers Ltd, with Ian S. Clews directing both companies, but each newspaper was assigned different editors and staff, with Clews hoping this would encourage competition between the sister papers. The Press, like the Gazette, was published at the Ribbon News-Pictorial plant in Papakura. It was acquired by Wilson & Horton Ltd, publishers of the New Zealand Herald, in late February 1965 and continued under its ownership until the end of its run on 29 March 1966.
